A 176-page report about the state of gambling in California presented an interesting picture. The report put huge numbers on the amount of money involved in the Californian gambling industry and predicted that these numbers would only increase in the years to come. However, while gambling generates $13-billion in California alone, it also contributes to many social ills which come with the package, such as addiction and crime.
Indian casinos featured prominently in California’s gambling industry. Half of all the gambling revenue in California (nearly $6-billion) came from Indian casinos. Another surprising finding in the report showed that 90% of the workers in Indian run gambling casinos were, in fact, not Native American. This emphasized the fact that this type of industry contributed to employment in the wider community. Furthermore, the report showed that Californian Indian casinos earned more than any other tribal casinos in the entire United States.
The CRB report also showed the negative sides of gambling in California. For example, 82.5% of people who turn to help lines for problem gambling say that their habits stemmed from gambling at casinos. The report also said that casinos contributed towards criminal activity in the state such as burglaries, theft and even rape. All in all, there were definitely some eye-opening facts to be had in the report and it will be interesting to see what the state intends doing with the findings.
